How to Destroy

a Person

Kristina Greenwalt

One.

Stand silently, squared to the one who you promised to never hurt

watch as you break that promise, and their heart.

Let yourself speak the truth “this isn’t working out”

Two,

Let the heavy air settle around you, resting on your feet.

Keeping you anchored to your spot forcing you to watch the storm you just stirred.

Ignore the guilt, making a home in your gut.

Three

Watch the crumbling in their face as they digest the words.

“I’m sorry.” It’s normal to apologize without meaning it.

“It’s not you, it’s me.” Even if it’s not true, say it.

Four

As they finally throw their own words into the storm,

don’t listen. They’ll plead for you to stay,

but there’s not enough I love you’s in the world to plant your feet next to them.

Five

When the weight dissipates from around you,

put one foot in front of the other until the chaos is far from your mind.

Leave them to pick up the pieces.
